Restaurant Concept

You want to open a restaurant! Develop your vision of what food will be served there, who will come to your restaurant, and how much it will cost to operate your restaurant.

Here are some suggestions:

  1. Research similar restaurants and the cost of ingredients.
  2. Use a Spreadsheet like MS Excel to determine the cost of ingredients for each dish.
  3. Develop a website for the restaurant.
  4. Use a 3D design program to envision the inside of your restaurant.
  5. Determine what people should pay for each dish.
  6. Use Word, Publisher, or InDesign to make menus.

School of Rock

Imagine your own BAND BRAND! You are the manager of a band and also the Drummer, and the CFO... and the chauffeur....

You and your band are starting to get attention but you recognize that your image needs to be a little more unified, so people recognize you and want to buy your swag.

Develop several of the following:

  1. Create some music in a music application!
  2. Design your band logo
  3. Use Access to take inventory of your equipment
  4. Design concert posters, tickets, t-shirts, etc. to sell to your fans!
  5. Build a website!
  6. Develop a social media strategy!
  7. Use a 3D application to design your stage!
  8. Design costumes for your band!
  9. ...? What else?

Rock on!

Design a Learning Space

Educational spaces are challenged by:

  1. Different students and interests
  2. Budget limitations
  3. Advances in technology and the challenges of keeping pace
  4. Multiple teachers, student ages, and schedules in conflict or competition for space

How would you design a building that would allow a very diverse group of people to share a space effectively? What kinds of activities do you see happening in this space? Will the space be more flexible or more "built in"?

Use 3D design software to envision an educational space (Library / Computer Lab / Maker Space?) and use Excel to track any equipment and prices that would need to be considered as part of the budget.

Make a Budget

You just got a new job and now you have an income. How much do you make per year? How much is your paycheck and how often do you receive it? How do you want to spend it? What expenses will you have?

Use a spreadsheet application like MS Excel or Google Sheets to make a budget which shows the day-to day balance of your bank account, considering income and expenses. Remember that Spreadsheets are generally made up of:

  1. Values (usually numbers)
  2. Labels (usually letters or verbal phrases)
  3. Formulas or Functions (a small program within the spreadsheet to do calculations)

Enter values that are already known (such as your income) but use Formulas to make the spreadsheet dynamic. And of course use Labels to show what the data represents.
